Nine tips to survive a Portland Winter — CA girl edition

I don’t know about you, but when the wintertime comes around, I get into hibernation mode. Bulking up on gluten free breads, piling on layers on layers of blankets, conserving all the heat and energy I can. Since I made my way up north, the biggest thing I noticed about Portland vs The Bay Area is that there are SEASONS. Yes, Spring, Summer, Fall, and WINTERRR ( or Winburrrr, yeah? no… ok). Enough of my yammering. Here are my nine tips to help a CA girl survive a Portland winter.

1. Layers

Layer up! (Adobe Firefly generated)

Layers are your new best friend in the winter. Especially heat conducting base layers. These are called many things, thermals, long underwear, the point is that they go under your regular clothes and provide that extra protection and warmth when you have to venture out to walk your dog, or get groceries.

2. HotHands

I didn’t know what these were until recently. They’re little magical packets full of what feels like sand. Once you shake ’em up, they heat up and save your fingies from freezing off. Like a handheld heater that doesn’t need to be plugged in. HotHands or “little hotties” (what the lady at Fred…
